Those who flow new opportunities to themselves, also know how to see chances and be seen as worthy to take the opportunity. Successful people know how to get more knowledge AND use it to transform their lives. If you have ever attended training, but could not remember it a week later, then you have an opportunity to learn the WISE cycle for transformational change.
Have you ever had a boss ask you what you learned from company-paid-for-training?
One time Jaye’s boss unexpectedly called on her to share at a monthly staff meeting. He was disappointed she could not recall many items from a week-long training course, a couple months previously. But, it is true of most people; after a several weeks, we have very little recall on most training investments.
In research to find out how to retain information and transform lives, an interesting observation emerged, American managers often identified weaknesses in employees and sent them to class to get better. Japanese managers identified strengths and sent them to class so they could mentor their peers.
Elif Sunar points out that “Our strengths are great resources for increasing our energy and making us feel dynamic.” We remember what makes us successful, and feels empowering.
Jaye Lill investigated several transformational techniques, to make strengths stronger. This is distilled into the WISE cycle, as KNOW. OWN. SHOW.
- KNOW. Understand the situation and it’s appropriate approaches.
- OWN. Make the knowledge your own. Apply what you KNOW.
- SHOW. Demonstrate measurable outcomes. Produce a deliverable, written instruction, or shared teaching.
“What’s in it for me?” should follow learning a basic concept. If it is not useful, then forget it, or learn how to retrieve it when you need it.
With your Mastermind Alliance, practice sharing your ideas.
- How do you learn knowledge?
- How can a manager see that you have this knowledge and can use it?
- How do you pass this info on to others?
Below, give an example of how you led yourself or others in transformational change.
People will pay you for your wisdom. They especially will pay for you to give them a short-cut and share practical, productive steps.
Add to your resume:
Know. Own. Show. Wise. Mentor. Productive. Recall. Write manuals. Database. Teach others. Cross-train. Content management.
When people can see transformative action in someone’s life, they are intrigued to learn more. One participant said, “I wanted to come and take your class, because my cousin’s life just turned completely around after he met you. Before, he was unemployed for a long time and didn’t know what to do. Now, he has a job, made enough to get married and is back in school. I want to know how what you told him, to change his life.”
It is our goal to repeat this positive experience, so everyone can, not only live a transformed life, but teach their family members how to do it too.
Share an example of how you learned knowledge, applied it in your life, and showed (or taught) it to others.
SITUATION
ACTION
RESULTS
When you are wise (gain and apply knowledge), how do you bring that value to others? (What happens if you forget what you learned?)
MISSION
I help others become wise, and use this wisdom anytime they want. They learn to apply appropriate approaches for each unique situation.
VISION
By my guided journals, and mentoring, they apply (know, own, and show) key business principles that increase productivity and success.
SABOTAGE
IF I don’t acquire knowledge, understand how I can use it, and teach it to others, THEN I waste new learning opportunities and their transforming power goes to those who do.
